Clynnog-fawr, Caernarfon, Wales
A turf-covered, oak-built underground cabin on a permaculture farm between the mountains and the sea near Clynnog-fawr in Caernarfon. The design blends Viking longhouse and earth-sheltered construction, set at the base of an orchard on a farm internationally recognised for its regenerative practices. Inside: mains electricity, a wood burner, a gas stove, a hot shower, and a compost toilet. Bedding for a double and two singles is provided.
The farm has small lakes with a boat, woodland hammocks, meadows, streams, and seasonal activities like haymaking. Fresh eggs, home-produced meats, and garden vegetables are available. Dogs are allowed for a £10 cleaning fee. At £127 a night with 276 reviews and 4.92, it occupies a genuinely singular position in the UK tiny stay market. There is nothing else quite like it.
We love the turf roof and the permaculture farm. This is not styled as a Viking longhouse for Instagram. It is built as one, on a working regenerative farm, and the whole experience follows through.
Guests appreciated the unique farm life experience, embracing outdoor facilities and stunning views despite initial hesitations. Sunny weather, friendly animals, a cozy log burner, and cleanliness enhanced their stay, making future visits desirable.
